artist's statementA Natural Eye My passion is the natural world and my joy is helping people appreciate and ultimately live more in harmony with the earth and its life. To that end, I divide my efforts between photography, writing and teaching. My photography focuses on two bodies of work: images of wilderness places and moments, and abstractions of the natural world. In both, I photograph using only natural light, without filters. As I learned the foundational skills in photography, I also became intrigued with the words of poets and the brushstrokes of painters as they interpreted the land in new ways. I set out to celebrate the abstract qualities of color, form and light. After years of taking rather boring records of outdoor places and things, I accidentally dropped my camera into a saltwater estuary in the Everglades. Freed from the burden of always feeling the need to carry a camera, I spent the ensuing years simply and purely seeing. When I picked up the camera many years later, my images were entirely different. It seems that in those years, without knowing it, something fundamental had changed: I had honed my natural eye.Eddie Soloway's images are printed on Fuji Crystal Archival Photographic Paper.
